How it works
tick value = tick size × contracts × multiplier
P&L = tick value × ticks moved
Worked example
Two contracts with a $0.50 tick: each tick is $1, so a 40-tick move swings $40. On CME BTC futures (5 BTC multiplier, $5 ticks) the same 40 ticks is $2,000.
FAQ
What is a tick versus a pip?
Same idea, different markets: the minimum price increment. Crypto perps often tick at $0.1 or $0.5; the label matters less than the dollar value at your size.
Why compute this at all?
Because stop distances think in ticks and accounts think in dollars. This is the exchange rate between the two.
