How it works

gain = proceeds − cost basis

tax = max(gain, 0) × applicable rate

Worked example

Sell for $30,000 with an $18,000 basis held over a year at 15%: $12,000 gain, $1,800 estimated tax, $28,200 kept. The same gain short-term at 30% owes $3,600.

FAQ

How do FIFO, LIFO and HIFO differ?

They pick which purchase lots you 'sold'. FIFO sells oldest (often lowest basis, biggest gain), HIFO sells highest-basis lots first to minimize gains. Jurisdictions restrict which you may use.

Can I file with this number?

No. It ignores lot-level detail, income brackets, and local rules. It is for planning; use proper software or a professional to file.
